Independent analysis of the tridactyl Nazca Mummies discovered in Peru shows new evidence of mismatching bones in the mummies’ hand.
What are the “Nazca mummies”?
The term refers to a group of unusual desiccated remains found near the Nazca region of Peru that display non-typical anatomical features, such as elongated skulls, three fingers and toes and reduced or altered bone structures.
They are sometimes called “tridactyl mummies.” Importantly, they are not associated with the ancient Nazca culture in any confirmed archaeological sense, despite the name.
Public discussion began around 2016–2017; Prior to that, no peer-reviewed archaeological publications referenced these bodies. Early awareness of the Nazca mummies spread primarily through Spanish-language alternative media, YouTube, and independent investigators rather than academic journals.
Who Discovered the Peru/Nazca Mummies?
The initial discovery is attributed to local grave looters (“huaqueros”), not professional archaeologists.
In Peru, huaqueros often emerged from rural communities living amid ancient burial mounds (“huacas”). Economic hardship, combined with high demand from international collectors, fueled the practice of unearthing and selling artifacts.

Reports from the first public display of the mummies suggested the discovery was made by a Peruvian man who claimed to have recovered the bodies from an undisclosed underground site near Nazca. The exact location has never been revealed, which is a major reason mainstream archaeology has rejected the discovery process.
This alone violates standard archaeological protocols:
• No controlled excavation
• No stratigraphic documentation
• No chain of custody
Who introduced the Nazca mummies to the public?
The mummies entered global awareness through Jaime Maussan, a Mexican journalist known for UFO and paranormal investigations. In 2017, Maussan and a group calling themselves “The Alien Project” released videos, photos, and CT scans online.
“Gaia” (a subscription streaming platform focused on alternative topics) hosted documentaries presenting the bodies as potentially non-human.
While presenting the Nazca mummies to the public, their claims included:
• Unknown species
• Hybrid beings
• Non-human intelligence
These claims were not endorsed by mainstream scientific institutions, however; legitimate scientists were involved in the research and analysis of the mummies.
Some examinations were reportedly conducted by researchers affiliated with Universidad Nacional San Luis Gonzaga.
It has been confirmed that Independent radiologists and labs also analyzed CT scans, X-rays, and DNA samples.
What mainstream institutions/scientists said:
Peru’s Ministry of Culture officially stated the remains are likely modern fabrications made from human bones, animal bones and modified skulls.
Current conclusion on the Nazca mummies:
Several forensic experts concluded that the fingers appear rearranged or surgically altered, bones are mismatched anatomically and some remains show evidence of post-mortem modification.
Peru has opened criminal investigations into trafficking and desecration of human remains.
TLDR

They became publicly known around 2016–2017 because a Mexican journalist, Jaime Maussan promoted them as possibly non-human.
Independent radiologists and labs analyzed CT scans, X-rays, and DNA.
Forensic reviews found rearranged fingers and mismatched hand bones.
Evidence suggests post-mortem modification using human and animal bones.
Peru opened criminal investigations for trafficking and desecration of human remains.
